Clans:
There are seven original clans: Bear, Bird, Crane, Deer, Fish, Loon, and Marten. Clan members are considered family, regardless of which nation they belong to. Each clan had unique gifts and roles that served the community. The Bear Clan held a special role — protectors of both the physical and spiritual realms,
often living on the outskirts of the village.
How the Bear Clan Became the Medicine People
Long ago, a tired, ragged old man came to a village seeking food and shelter. He was turned away by each clan’s home, including those marked with the Turtle and Snake emblems. Finally, a kind elderly woman from the Bear Clan welcomed him in, offering him food and a place to rest.
The next day, the old man became ill and instructed the woman to gather specific plants from the forest. She followed his instructions, and he recovered using the medicine they prepared. This happened several times, each with different herbs and teachings.
Eventually, the old man revealed himself as the Creator. He explained that he had tested the compassion of the village and that the Bear Clan woman was the only one who showed kindness. As a reward, he gave her the knowledge of healing, declaring that from that day forward, the Bear Clan would be the Keepers of the Medicine — responsible for healing and carrying the knowledge of traditional medicine.
